Which teeth whitening products do I need to start offering professional teeth whitening?

To start offering professional teeth whitening, you obviously need good teeth whitening products, but the most important thing is proper training.

Simply owning whitening gel, a whitening lamp and cheek retractors does not make you a professional teeth whitening technician. You need enough knowledge to assess whether a treatment can be carried out properly and safely, when you should adapt the treatment and when you need to say: no, I am not going to treat this client.

That knowledge is at least as important as the products you work with.

Start with knowledge, not products

A good professional course teaches you much more than how to apply whitening gel. You should learn, among other things:

• how teeth are structured and what causes discolouration;
• which types of discolouration are likely to respond to whitening and which are not;
• how to assess whether a client is suitable for treatment;
• which contraindications are important;
• when a treatment should be adapted;
• when it is better not to treat;
• when a client should first be referred to a dentist;
• how to work safely and hygienically;
• how to use different whitening products correctly;
• how to work correctly with a whitening lamp;
• how to explain realistic expectations to the client;
• how to assess the result professionally.

A satisfied client does not start with the strongest whitening gel. It starts with a professional who understands what they are doing and why.

Which products do you need?

For professional X-treme Smile teeth whitening treatments, you will generally need:

• suitable professional whitening gel;
• a professional teeth whitening lamp;
• cheek retractors;
• application materials and microbrushes;
• gel cups;
• gloves;
• disposable and hygiene materials;
• a professional whitening shade guide;
• client consultation forms;
• clear aftercare information.

The exact whitening gel and additional materials depend on the treatment and protocol you are using.

At X-treme Smile, you always use a whitening lamp

A whitening lamp is a standard part of our professional teeth whitening protocol.

The whitening lamp is designed to illuminate the visible teeth evenly during treatment. It is therefore important to use a professional lamp intended for teeth whitening and to position it correctly at the appropriate distance from the client.

A whitening lamp is very different from a curing light used for tooth gems. A tooth gem curing light concentrates light onto a very small area, whereas a teeth whitening lamp is designed to spread light evenly across a larger part of the teeth.

Use a dedicated whitening shade guide

For professional teeth whitening, use a dedicated whitening shade guide that makes the before-and-after difference easy for both you and your client to understand.

We do not use the standard dental A, B, C and D shade system for this purpose. Those shades are commonly used in dentistry for matching tooth colour for restorations and are less intuitive for clients during a whitening treatment.

A whitening shade guide runs clearly from darker to lighter shades. This makes it easy to record the starting shade before treatment and show the client how many shade steps have been achieved afterwards.

We also recommend taking before-and-after photographs under lighting conditions that are as similar as possible.

Do I always need gum protection?

No. This depends on the whitening product you use.

With the cosmetic whitening products used in salons, a separate gingival barrier is normally not required when the product is used correctly according to its protocol.

If you are an appropriately authorised professional working with hydrogen peroxide whitening products for which gingival protection is required, the gums must be protected carefully.

Gum protection is therefore not automatically part of every cosmetic teeth whitening treatment.

Can anyone simply buy the products separately?

No. At X-treme Smile, we believe professional whitening products and equipment should be used by someone with sufficient knowledge to work responsibly.

Why is training so important to us?

Because teeth whitening is not simply a matter of applying gel, switching on a lamp and waiting.

During treatment, you need to be able to make professional decisions:

Can I treat this client?
Is this type of discolouration suitable for cosmetic whitening?
Should I adapt the treatment?
Should I stop?
Should this client see a dentist first?

You also need to be able to explain why one client may achieve a dramatic result while another sees a smaller change.

Without this knowledge, there is a greater risk of unrealistic expectations, incorrectly performed treatments and ultimately dissatisfied clients.

A good starter kit is more than a box of products
