Zirconia Tooth Gems are faceted dental crystals made from Cubic Zirconia (CZ), a synthetic material with a clear, diamond-like appearance. At X-treme Smile® you will find zirconia gems in different colours, sizes and shapes, including round, heart and star designs.

They are available with or without a silver-coloured backing. This choice can influence the contrast with the tooth and the way the natural tooth colour contributes to the final design.

Which Zirconia Tooth Gem should you choose?

With a silver-coloured backing: the gem may contrast more clearly with the tooth surface. Without a silver-coloured backing: the natural tooth colour may have more visual influence.

Choosing Zirconia Tooth Gems: appearance, backing & design

The final appearance of a zirconia Tooth Gem is influenced by several characteristics working together. Faceting, colour, size, shape, backing, tooth colour and lighting can all affect how the gem ultimately looks on the tooth.

It is therefore useful to assess a zirconia gem not only as an individual stone, but also in relation to the tooth on which it will be placed and any other Tooth Gems within the same design.

What is Cubic Zirconia?

Cubic Zirconia, commonly abbreviated as CZ, is a synthetically manufactured crystalline material used as a diamond simulant. It is not a diamond. CZ can be produced in different colours, sizes and shapes and has a bright decorative appearance due to its faceted finish.

The different facets interact with light and viewing angle. As a result, the same zirconia gem may appear slightly different when viewed from different positions.

With or without a silver-coloured backing?

With a silver-coloured backing

The silver-coloured backing forms a visible background behind the gem. This can make the zirconia contrast more clearly with the natural tooth surface.

Without a silver-coloured backing

Without this backing, the natural tooth colour may visually contribute more to the result. The same zirconia colour can therefore appear slightly different on different teeth.

Consider the complete design

Do not choose based on the backing alone. Colour, size, shape, tooth colour, available space and surrounding Tooth Gems all contribute to the final visual result.

Tooth colour & background influence the result

Especially with zirconia gems without a silver-coloured backing, the underlying tooth colour may influence the perceived appearance. The same gem can therefore look slightly different on a lighter, warmer or darker tooth.

This is particularly relevant when combining several zirconia gems or when you want to create a specific colour composition within a tooth gem design.

Facets, lighting & viewing angle

Zirconia gems are faceted. The different surfaces can interact with light from several directions, causing the visual effect to change with the viewing angle and lighting conditions.

For this reason, do not assess a gem only while it is lying flat on a work surface. Also consider the position and orientation it will have when incorporated into the final design on the tooth.

Combining colour, size & shape

Round zirconia Tooth Gems are versatile, while a heart or star immediately introduces a recognisable shape to the design. A larger or more strongly coloured gem can act as the focal point, while smaller gems can be used to build the composition around it.

When several Tooth Gems are combined, consider colour, size, shape, position and spacing as one complete composition.

Assess the gem within the complete design

Before placement, consider how the colour, size, shape and backing of the zirconia gem work with the tooth and any surrounding Tooth Gems. Particularly in more elaborate designs, it helps to assess the complete composition before choosing each element individually.
